Biomechanics of insect cuticle: an interdisciplinary experimental challenge

چکیده
Abstract The cuticle exoskeleton plays a key role in facilitating the evolutionary success of insects. Since mid last century, many different biomechanical properties exoskeletons have been investigated, always utilizing most sophisticated scientific methods available at time. So far, information on seems to be as diverse used measure them. As consequence, insect is often considered exhibit complex and any biological material. However, it remains unclear which respective measurement sample treatments previous studies play supporting this claim. This review provides broad overview examination techniques study discusses their advantages disadvantages describing material such cuticle. Our meta-analysis present data confirms significant effects methods, body parts obtained mechanical properties. Based our findings, we highlight research gaps point out important factors should taken into account future

Fatigue of insect cuticle.
Many parts of the insect exoskeleton experience repeated cyclic loading. Although the cuticle of insects and other arthropods is the second most common natural composite material in the world, so far nothing is known about its fatigue properties, despite the fact that fatigue undoubtedly limits the durability of body parts in vivo. For the first time, we here present experimental fatigue data o...
متن کاملBiomechanics of the stick insect antenna: damping properties and structural correlates of the cuticle.
The antenna of the Indian stick insect Carausius morosus is a highly specialized near-range sensory probe used to actively sample tactile cues about location, distance or shape of external objects in real time. The length of the antenna's flagellum is 100 times the diameter at the base, making it a very delicate and slender structure. Like the rest of the insect body, it is covered by a protect...
متن کاملChronic tinnitus: an interdisciplinary challenge.
BACKGROUND Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic stimulus. It is a common problem that markedly impairs the quality of life of about 1% of the general population. METHODS We selectively reviewed the pertinent literature to provide an overview of the current treatment options for chronic tinnitus. RESULTS Cognitive behavioral thera...
متن کاملInsect cuticle, an in vivo model of protein trafficking.
In the course of this study more than 20 proteins have been isolated from the larval cuticle of Manduca sexta. Synthesis, secretion, transport and accumulation of four particular proteins, representative members of four characteristic groups, were followed during metamorphosis by immunoblot and immuncytochemical methods and are described in detail in this paper. We established that only some of...
متن کاملAn active reduction of water level in insect cuticle.
The control of water movement through the cuticle of terrestrial arthropods is demonstrated by a number of phenomena. For example, Lees (1946) has shown an active retention of water, Winston & Nelson (1965) indicate an active regulation of water loss, and Beament (1961) reviews the evidence for active uptake of atmospheric water. These phenomena are best explained by a water pump of some kind i...
